Orbital Satcom supplies SmartOne C trackers to help track generators in the wake of hurricanes Irma and Maria
Satellite trackers helped teams at the scene of two natural disasters locate the whereabouts of vital power generators.
In 2017, two categogry-5 hurricanes Irma and Maria destroyed the lives of those living in the US Virgin Islands and Puerto Rico. With windspeeds in excess of 180mph, the devastation was widespread. A swift, coordinated emergency recovery mission was absolutely critical.

The Challenge
Hurricanes Irma and Maria caused catastrophic damage to the St. Thomas, St. John, and St. Croix territories of the US Virgin Islands as well as parts of Puerto Rico. They were two of the worst storms experienced in the region for years, and they happened within two weeks of each other. The extensive damage to power meant almost Territory-wide communications outages and blackouts.
The Solution
To try and restore the region’s power, a third party supplier of temporary power solutions brought in generators which needed to be remotely monitored in order to make sure they were in the right position at all times.
To achieve this, 150 SmartOne C satellite trackers were deployed by Orbital Satcom to a US-based electricity provider and were installed to track the position and movements of the generators.
The Results
The SmartOne C trackers were perfect for this emergency situation due to their ease of installation and remote connection reliability.
Their ability to geo-fence a region meant that dispatchers received alerts if or when a generator found its way outside a pre-configured location. Plus the unlimited GPS alerts being sent to the tracker’s online mapping portal meant that their locations – and those of the generators – were always known.
